...CASE STUDY - I PRATHAMESH STEEL (PVT.) LTD. Prathamesh Steel (Pvt.) Ltd. founded 15 years before by Mr. A.M. Bapat was having booming time. At that time, Mr. Bapat, worked both in the office and in the factory and knew his men and they knew him. Production standard were always maintained and labour turnover was practically non-existing. As the business mushroomed, the number of employees has progressively increased. Thus, Mr. Bapat's greetings and conversation with his workers became less frequent. As this time though the number of workers increased to about 500, labour turnover and absenteeism increased along with the labour cases. The only thing that decreased was productivity. In order to meet the situations, Mr. Bapat granted substantial increase in wages which were already high and made some arrangements for increment earnings based on merit rating on seniority. Yet labour turnover and absenteeism continue at a high rate. On investigation, it was found that the new plant supervisor lacked the patience and understanding which is necessary for dealing with the employees. When something was found wrong, he was scolding the employees but no attempt was made to find the case of faulty work. Meanwhile, labour unrest developed. I imagine that when Anthony Athanas was purchasing those old piers back in the 1960s many, if not all, of his colleagues, friends, and family members told him that he was off his rocker. I’m sure Athanas was looking at this land as his family’s ticket to financial prosperity and somewhat of a legacy that he could leave to his descendants for years and years to come. One of the items I wish the case would have divulged is the amount of money that Athanas had invested in the properties. For me this information would have given an insight to his net worth and how much he had riding on this investment. I assume it was substantial given his actions later in the process. Twenty years later Athanas’ dreams came true and all those naysayers were more than likely green with envy. The amount of pride Athanas’ had in his investment at that moment had to have been insurmountable. Being approached by a big time real estate development company and their extremely wealthy client, Hyatt Corporation, must have made Athanas feel larger than life and made him feel like something he isn’t, which is a developer himself. ...Slade Plating Department In the case of the Slade Plating department there are a number of problems that occur within the company. The main problem is that most of the employees within the department punch fellow co-workers timecards out when the employees are not there. A lot of these problems can be linked to the business’ organizational behavior. There are many employees within the firm that have organized into teams. The most organized being the Sarto and Clark groups. Employees in these groups and some within smaller groups have developed a system where one person in the group stays after the manager leaves at 5:00pm. The alternating individual staying late punches out the other employee’s timecards at 7:00pm allowing most of the staff to go home early without losing pay. This problem occurs because the manager arrives later and leaves earlier than any other employee. The workers are unsupervised for many hours per day and are often not supervised at all on weekends. Proper supervision and coordination of authority is paramount to improving the existing problem at the Slade Plating Department. These practices also occur because the hourly wage offered is low and the system being used is fairly easy to manipulate.
